| NAFL- LEAGUE NEWS Thoughts and Prayers Are With the London Silverbacks The team bus carrying the London Silverbacks' players and staff members was involved in a fatal accident on Sunday morning. Our most sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the London Silverbacks organization, their immediate family and friends, and especially to team owner Alan Lazar, who is being kept overnight for observation. NAFL Commissioner Robin Williams released the following: "Sunday was Father's Day, and while many of you were spending time with family and friends, I was spending my day with family as well. Unfortunately, we were not having fun and a good time. On Saturday night the London Silverbacks traveled to Indiana and played the Tornados. Today (Sunday) they were heading home and were involved in an auto accident at approximately 11:40 AM (CST). It seems that an SUV crossed the median and ran into the team bus head-on, and caused the bus to crash into the median. While there was a fatality with a person in the SUV, the players, coaches and staff members of the Silverbacks were hurt, and several of them required medical assistance. Fortunately there was a National Guard group traveling nearby, and they stopped. All of the Silverbacks were removed from the bus, and a triage was set up for the injured people. The most serious injury was incurred by team owner Alan Lazar. He was taken to one hospital, and then had to be airlifted to another one due to his injuries. I have had the opportunity to speak with staff from the London team all day, and I am happy to report as of 6:00 PM (MST) that all, with the exception of Alan and his wife Bev, are on a bus heading back to Canada, and are scheduled to arrive at approximately 12:30 AM (EST). I have to say that my thoughts and prayers are with all, especially Alan and Bev. I wish them nothing but the best and hope for a speedy and safe recovery. If any of you have had the opportunity to meet them, they are fantastic people and I remember the first time we met in Canada when I attended a game there. They are very professional team owners, and this is reflected by the championship the Silverbacks won in 2007 in Las Vegas. Please pray for everyone as they travel home, and for Alan as he is still in the hospital. In the conversation I had with one of the coaches (Jason), he said that the one thing to keep in mind is that after every football game both teams come together for the team prayer and pray for the safe return of the visiting team, and that this really shows the power of prayer no matter what your religious beliefs. None of us ever want to experience this and we don't want to see it happen to others. I must also take time to give a HUGE THANK YOU to Evan Triggs (Indianapolis Tornados), who called and informed me of this tragic event hours after it took place. Thank you also to a member of the London Silverbacks Dance Team (Elizabeth) for calling me with an update, the two coaches (Ken and Jason) who called and provided me with updates on the team and what was occurring, the staff at Cameron Memorial Hospital who were kind and provided me with information, and gave mine to the Silverbacks so they could reach me, the National Guard Unit who stopped and helped the team out on the roadside, the Red Cross and church for providing assistance and a place for individuals to go while waiting for others to be discharged and seen at the hospital, and GOD for making sure the injuries were not more serious then they were. I have also spoken to Bev and she is with Alan, and he is in the hospital for observation this evening, and it looks hopeful that he will be released tomorrow and they will be able to go home. Everyone please keep this in mind and remember no one knows what the future may bring. We are all so blessed to be able to be a part of this great sport and league. Keep this all in mind as we continue to play the game, and how so much in our lives is taken for granted. Little things can seem huge, but in the end we all know what is important. Also on the communication side, it is so important to communicate to others so things can be worked out and figured out. I will say this again and again, and especially right now to the London Silverbacks, if there is anything I can do, I am a phone call away. I support each one of you and I am always happy to talk, listen and try to help. So here is my phone number to all....720-339-4113....and if you need to talk and have someone listen to you, I am happy to do this. I may not be available 24/7, but if you leave a message, I will call you back." Sincerely, Robin Williams Commissioner NAFL |
